Other changes include replacing the over-the-top haymaker with a modifier to simply add a little oomph to any punch, simplified blocking, and a new stamina/endurance system that's a touch more sophisticated than before. No one can really play like a fool and have long-term success with Fight Night. You can still attempt a ridiculous rapid-punch session, but the penalty of exhausting your fighter quickly is severe. It's nice to know you are definitely throwing an uppercut rather than hoping you made the right movements with the thumbstick to pull one off. The altered punching system not only speeds up the flow of a bout, but also puts the emphasis of your fighting skills on your strategy. Now, every punch is thrown by flicking the stick quickly in a specific direction. Gone is the old punching system that required complex analogue stick moves, such as half-circle moves for uppercuts. Not only can you see the impact of punches, but some gameplay tweaks give you better control over their delivery. It's all over the ring - and Roberto Duran's trunks.įight Night Champion, the fifth entry in the series, does an excellent job of enhancing the experience in the ring.

And once the blood starts flowing, you'll know it. You can tell the severity of a cut – from mere scrapes to deep gashes – on the cheek just by looking. You can practically see the imprint of the glove on someone's face when you tag them enough.

My opponent's blood.įight Night Champion shows the brutal price boxers pay for stepping into the ring. After a moment, I realized it wasn't dye in the fabric, but blood. A few rounds in, I noticed Duran's white trunks had this odd red pattern on them. It was my first fight as the great Roberto Duran. Great game with a very intresting story Mode! Gamers can box as or against more than 50 real-life stars of the sport, including Pernell Whitaker, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ray Leonard, Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, and the Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, as well as many other pugilist superstars from the past and present. Multiplayer boxing is supported for up to four on the same system, or for as many as ten online. As in previous Fight Night games, players can also create their own boxer character and battle their way up the ranks in "Legacy" mode. The single player "Championship" mode presents a story-driven campaign, with themes of greed and corruption that test an athlete's integrity outside of the ring, as well as his prowess within. The game's anaerobic stamina system models exhaustion in individual muscle groups so that using a favorite punch repeatedly will quickly fatigue the over-used muscles, and boxers are encouraged to stay on their toes and mix up their attacks. The new "Full Spectrum Punch" control system allows players to execute uppercuts, overhands, jabs, and even one-shot knock-outs, in an intuitive, realistic flow.

The main attraction in Fight Night Champion may be the physics-based animated action, which applies the effects of each hit with individual precision.
